‘Green Arts Collective’
An Initiation as a Part of Golden Jubilee Celebrations

Introduction
The ‘Green Arts Collective’ proposes and initiates the Green Faculty of Arts. Greenery’s strategic role is to make the world more feasible. In addition to providing crucial ecosystem services, carbon sequestration, biodiversity, and reduction of the Urban Heat Island effect, plants also help. In addition to removing dangerous gases and airborne pollutants, they also cool the air, provide oxygen, and maintain moisture in the atmosphere. Through all these, it will increase energy levels, the positive mood of the people, improve their concentration, and reduce their stress levels. It also marks the visual and cultural heritage of the University of Jaffna. Finally, its hope to leads to reserving the land’s natural heritage is to help the community find its identity.

Objectives:

  • Planting the native trees and other vegetation in the Faculty of Arts.
  • Arrange interior plants inside of the Faculty building.
  • Landscaping the Faculty of Arts mainly by the vegetation.
  • Making a natural and healthy environment in and around the Faculty premises.
  • Enriching the psychological environment among the students and teachers.
  • Building identity through trees.

Pattern of Activities

  • Raising awareness among Faculty members of the need for a bio-diverse environment.
  • Plotting the area for various kinds of panting the vegetation.
  • Interior design through vegetation.
  • Keeping the dialogue with vegetation and building through the continued observation.
  • Working with the departments and student associations to make sure the green plan.

Outcomes

  • Establishing the Green Arts Faculty
  • Promoting the nature-loving community
  • Safeguarding environmentally friendly attitudes and activities

Launching Event

The launching event of the ‘Green Arts Collective’ was held on the 20th of September 2024 at the Faculty of Arts premises under the direction of Dr. P. Ahilan, Coordinator, ‘Green Arts Collective’ and with the participation of Prof. S. Srisatkunarajah, Vice Chancellor, Prof. P. Balasundrampillai and Prof. N. Shanmugalingam, Former Vice Chancellors and Prof. S. Raguram, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Mr. Sarveswara Iyer Padmanaban, Dean, Faculty of Hindu Studies, Heads of the Departments, Ms. Sumithra, Deputy Registrar of the Faculty of Arts, Staff of the Faculty of Arts and the Representatives of the Students Associations.
