Archaeology Students Participated in  Kantharodai Excavation

Archaeology staff and the special degree students (Final Year & Third year Second semester) of the Department of History, University of Jaffna have participated in joint excavation with the Department of Archaeology of Sri Lanka and the Commission for Archaeology of Non-European Cultures (KAAK) of the German Archaeological Institute (DAI), on the site of Kantharodai (Jaffna), for 19 days between July 17th and August 16th, 2023.

KAAK is based in Bonn and dedicated to archaeological research worldwide with a focus on America, Africa, Asia and Oceania. It cooperates with universities and research institutions in the respective host countries. Many projects are interdisciplinary in order to develop and test new methods for archaeological research through intensive cooperation, for example with technicians and scientists.

The archaeology students of the Department of History, University of Jaffna participated in the archaeological research carried out in Kantharodai and learned about archaeological research methods and new techniques and practices in archaeological survey.

Details about the excavation were explained to them by Dr.Nimal Perara, Corresponding Member of the DAI, Former Deputy Director General, Department of Archaeology, Sri Lanka, Dr.Ariane Associate for South Asia, DAI – KAAK and Mrs.Sivaruby Sajitharan, Senior Lecturer in Archaeology (Grade II), Department of History, University of Jaffna.
