History of the Department of Education

Late Prof.S.Vithiananthan, Late Prof.K.Kailasapathy, Late Prof.P.Chandrasegaram, and several others, had laboured to establish the Department of Education at the University of Jaffna.

The Department of Education did start functioning at the University of Jaffna on 1980-10-15 with the transfer of 45 Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (Full Time) Students and five academics, namely, Prof.P.Chandrasegaram, Prof.V.Arumugam, Dr.T.Velalutham, Late Dr.T.Karunananthan and Prof K.Sinnathamby from the Faculty of Education, University of Colombo.

Soon, the department leaped forward with its multifaceted activities under the excellent guidance of late Prof. P. Chandrasegaram as head of the Department. The following year, the M.A. in Education course (Later transformed into M.Phil in Education) was begun, and followed by the start of a Post-Graduate Diploma in Education (Part Time) course.

In addition to its normal function, the department acted to the request of the then Vice-chancellor , Late Prof.A.Thuraiajah to accommodate the Worker’s Education Unit which was under an academic coordinator appointed from the Department of Education.  A one year Certificate Course in Workers Education was conducted with a regular intake every year since inception in 1991 Workers Education Course.  All these activities came to a temporary standstill with the mass exodus of 1995.

The Department did experience a setback in 1987 and again in 1995.  The untimely demise of Prof.P.Chandrasegaram in November 1987 during Indian Army Military operation; was a severe blow to the Education Expansion Programmes of the department.  Again, the mass exodus from Jaffna in 1995 during the military operations severely curtailed the activities of the department and in fact this may be consigned as thereason for the suspension of the PGDE Part Time Course for some time.

Being with the World Bank Aid in 1999 through the TETD Project of the Ministry of Education, the department was able to begin its next phase of flourish.  The DETD Project was in the form of fund allocation for purchase of Educational of scholarships for professional Development to academic members of the department..

On the academic activities side, the PGDE Part Time Course was commenced in 1999 and permission to start a B.Ed Course was granted by the U.G.C. in 1999.  The one year taught course in Master of Education was initiated in 2000.  The M.Ed Course was initially conducted at the Faculty of Graduate Studies, University of Jaffna and had been extended to a Centre at the Vavuniya Campus in 2003.

The increase of the academic staff from five at the beginning to a permanent cadre of eight was a significant feature in the development trend of the department.  The appointment of academic staff on temporary and contract basis from time to time also contributed to the development of the department.

The formation of a students body by the name ‘Education Society’ since the inception of the department, a publication of the Journal ‘Kalaignanam’ and the creation of a fund by the Education Society in toward a Gold Medal at every Convocation in memory of late Prof.P.Chandrasegaram, and various other educational activities like Education Trips, Seminars and Workshops have added flavour and glamour to the Department’s Development.

At present our Department successfully running with six academic staff and two non academic staff. We are conducting Post Graduate Diploma in Education Full time and Part time taught courses and we are assisting to the Faculty of Graduate studies to conducting MEd taught course and research degrees such as MPhil in Education and PhD in Education. Recently we created Department website. MEd course syllabus was revised according to the new credit system.
